Bridging the Gap
Bridging the Gap is a 30-minute documentary that explores how two Wisconsin schools (Howe Elementary, Green Bay and Bruce Guadalupe Community School, Milwaukee) confronted by income inequalities, racial and ethnic mixes are bridging the achievement gap.
State testing confirms that students from economically disadvantaged families score significantly lower than their classmates. More troubling is that the achievement gap doesn’t close from 3rd to 10th grade. Students that fall behind academically when they begin school tend to stay at the bottom of the class.
This program looks at the following elements in helping bridge the achievement gap: teacher and parental engagement, culturally responsive materials, school climate and community partnerships.
